Senate confirms mine review commission nominee

Washington — The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Moshe Marvit to serve on the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission.

Marvit’s confirmation restores full membership to the five-seat panel, which handles appeals of citations and penalties assessed against mine operators by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. He was confirmed March 6 by a 50-49 vote. His term is set to expire Aug. 30, 2028.

President Joe Biden in January renominated Marvit to fill an FMSHRC position after the Senate didn’t act on his initial nomination, submitted in June 2022.

Cecil Roberts, president of United Mine Workers of America, applauds the confirmation of Marvit, “a highly regarded attorney and worker’s advocate” who “has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to fairly upholding mine safety laws and protecting workers’ rights throughout his career.”

Roberts continued: “As a result of his extensive expertise and unwavering dedication to mine safety and health, Moshe Marvit is ready to address challenges faced by working miners. This confirmation reflects a significant step toward ensuring the safeguarding of miners’ rights in every mine across the country.”

Mary Lu Jordan and Timothy Baker were confirmed to FMSHRC in September 2022, restoring a quorum of four members to the commission.
