Washington – American Trucking Associations leaders, on behalf of the association and the industry, are celebrating and thanking the nation’s truck drivers this week as part of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.
“Every day, our country’s 3.7 million truck drivers deliver America’s freight safely, securely and efficiently – they are the glue that keeps our economy and nation together,” said ATA President and CEO Chris Spear. “And while they should be appreciated all year round, we are proud to recognize them this week during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.”
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, September 11-17, provides the trucking industry an opportunity to formally recognize the efforts of professional truck drivers. State trucking associations, industry suppliers, law enforcement and motor carriers of all sizes from coast to coast are set to host appreciation events for the men and women who safely deliver more than 70% of the country’s total freight tonnage.
More than 80% of American cities and towns exclusively rely on trucks to deliver their goods, and driving a truck is the top job in 29 states.
As part of the weeklong celebration, ATA is bringing its rolling classroom, Interstate One, to Capitol Hill today and inviting policymakers to talk to members of America’s Road Team about the industry and try their hand at a driving simulator.
“Our drivers – whether they are delivering emergency relief goods or simply doing their normal runs – can be counted on to get the job done,” said ATA Chairman Harold Sumerford Jr.“We should thank them every day, but I call on my fellow Americans – along with our industry – to recognize these hardworking men and women this week.”
ATA members celebrate NTDAW with cookouts and other events, and Trucking Moves America Forward is recognizing drivers with a series of billboards around the country in partnership with many state trucking associations. TMAF will also be thanking truck drivers and sharing need-to-know industry facts on the radio airwaves on Red Eye Radio, Westwood One Sports and Westwood One talk radio programs. To participate in NTDAW, or show how you’re celebrating drivers – post your events on social media with the hashtag #ThankATrucker.
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is sponsored by the Allied Committee for the Trucking Industry (ACT I). ATA and ACT I are asking the motoring public to thank professional drivers through fuel pump advertising this month.

Distracted Driving Safety Ad Campaign Launched by the Arizona Trucking Association Foundation
Phoenix, AZ – As the ad states, “Distracted driving is deadly, period!” Yet every day the professional men and women of the trucking industry see the dangers of distracted driving on Arizona’s roads.
Distracted driving puts people’s lives and families at risk. That is why the Arizona Trucking Association Foundation (ATA Foundation) has launched a public safety campaign discussing the dangers of distracted driving on Arizona’s roads. The ATA Foundation’s campaign is being run through the Arizona Broadcasters Association (ABA) Public Education Programing (PEP), which allows the ads to reach a wider audience at a discounted rate.
The ads feature Arizona professional truck drivers, including two national truck driving championship winners, who represent the best drivers in Arizona. The ads are running in both Spanish and English on over 175 different TV and radio stations around the state for the next four months.
“Ask any professional truck driver what they fear on the road, and they will tell you distracted drivers,” stated ATA Foundation Executive Director, Tony Bradley. “Distracted driving is not just dangerous, its deadly. However, people don’t always see the risks they are putting themselves and others in when they don’t pay attention to the road. Our hope is that we can give another perspective to the problem from our professionals drivers who see distracted driving daily from behind the wheel of their tractor trailers.”
The television versions of the ads can be seen here:

ATA Commends the Passage and Signing of House Bill 2173
Legislation allows commercial drivers to renew their CDL every eight years instead of five
Tolleson, AZ – Yesterday, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed House Bill 2173 into law, Commercial Driver Licenses; Renewal Time (HB2173). HB2173 passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate with unanimous support.
HB2173 adds three years to the renewal period for a person possessing a commercial driver license, increasing the renewal period from five years to eight years. Medical certificates and hazmat endorsement remain the same.
“Truck drivers often spend long periods of time away from home and during this pandemic they have been on the frontlines delivering necessary food, supplies, medicine, and more,” stated ATA President and CEO, Tony Bradley. “HB2173 makes it easier on drivers to renew their CDLs now and in the future by extending the renewal period from five to eight years. ATA and its membership are grateful for the overwhelming bi-partisan support we received from legislators. We would like to thank our primary sponsor Rep. Frank Carroll in addition to our co-sponsors Rep. Leo Biasiucci, Rep. Judy Burges, Rep. Tim Dunn, Rep. Gail Griffin, Rep. Brett Roberts, Rep. Ben Toma, and Rep. Justin Wilmeth. Finally, we would like to thank Governor Ducey for signing this important legislation,” continued Bradley.
The new law will take effect on the General Effective date, which is 90 days after the legislature adjourns sine die.
